The California city of Fresno, with a population of over 530,000, is the county seat of Fresno County and lies at the centre of the San Joaquin Valley. It was founded in 1872 and ultimately incorporated in 1885. By then the first Big Fresno Fair had already taken place in 1883, and an integral part of that first Fair was a 5 day programme of horse races which matched the horses of local farmers. The modern day races became more formal in 1935 when the inaugural meeting was staged on 25th September 1935. It has offered programmes of thoroughbred and quarter horse races in the past on its 8 furlong oval track, with separate 2 furlong and 6 furlong sprint chutes, sharing a 299 metre home straight. Whilst it had to close during the outbreak of World War II, it resumed racing in 1948 and went from strength to strength, and now offers 9 days of racing annually, the highlight of the racing year being the Bulldog Stakes. |
